In 1895 The Time Machine appeared as a 32,000 word novella, published by Heinemann of London in serialized form. Book editions were published in both New York and London in May, 1895 ñ the editions were slightly different. The Time Machine has been in print continuously since its first publication.

The story begins with a discussion by the Time Traveler whose name is never revealed. The Time Traveler believes that it is possible to time travel. At Hillyerís he produces a small time machine and he and it disappears into the air. A week later the guests are at Hillyerís and the Time Traveler has returned.

The Traveler relates how he traveled to the year 802,701 A.D. where he met the Eloi - small humanlike creatures. The Eloi are passive and seem intellectually uncurious. Soon after he arrives and while exploring the terrain, his time machine disappears. The Traveler soon notices there is another species of creature which looks like a large white ape. These are the Morlocks and they live underground.
